House trap clogs and the cleanout plugs on top
Updated October 30, 2026 · 2-minute read · Old House Sewer Lines
A house trap clog blocks the one path every drain in the house shares, so the trouble shows up across fixtures rather than at a single sink. The trap's capped cleanout openings are how a plumber clears it, but those plugs must not be loosened while sewage is standing in the line.
The NYS Department of State lists the clogging tendency as one reason the code turned against these fittings. In its outreach bulletin on building traps, DOS says such a trap "can potentially result in a blocked or clogged pipe" and that it is redundant, since each fixture already has its own water seal (NYS DOS). State code has banned new ones outright (§1002.6), though existing ones may remain until the plumbing is altered. Background is in the house trap.
How it shows up
A clog anywhere on the main line produces similar signs, and the house trap is one of the likely spots in an older home. North Dakota State University Extension notes that a gurgling toilet, or one that will not flush properly, can be the first sign of trouble in the drain and vent system (NDSU Extension). The wider list is in signs of a sewer line problem, and the first steps are in main sewer line clog.
What goes down the drain matters at a bend like this. EPA says grease poured into sinks builds up and can block private laterals (EPA lateral appendix), and FEMA's homeowner guide says not to flush wipes, sanitary products or excess toilet paper (FEMA). Keeping those out of the drains is the part of prevention that falls to the household.
Clearing it
Clearing the trap is plumber's work. With the pressure relieved and the right access, the plumber can rod or flush the trap and, if the blockage is further out, the line toward the street. NYSEG's cross-bore guidance separates the two cases. Indoors, it treats a stoppage as ordinary and fine to clear; beyond the foundation, a gas service may have been drilled straight through the sewer pipe (NYSEG). If the clog turns out to lie past the trap, a camera look before any cutting tool is the safer order.
Avoid chemical drain openers on a fully blocked main. Poison Control reports a child burned by lye drain cleaner that splashed, one acid opener's label warns it can erupt from the drain, and no drain product may be combined with bleach or another cleaner. Chemical drain cleaners covers the label rules.
When the trap keeps clogging
Repeated clogs at the same fitting are a reason to talk with a plumber about removing it. That requires a permit and must meet the code for new work. Because a trap sometimes provides the only cleanout for the drain and its junction with the sewer, DOS notes, removal may require new cleanouts. See removing a house trap and the sewer cleanout.
Key facts
- DOS says a building trap is redundant and can lead to a blocked or clogged pipe (NYS DOS).
- §1002.6 bars any new house trap in New York.
- A gurgling toilet can be the first sign of a drain or vent problem (NDSU Extension).
- Per NYSEG, an indoor stoppage carries no gas-line risk, while an outdoor one might mean a cross bore (NYSEG).
- Removing a trap may require new cleanouts, since it is sometimes the only one.
