About this site

Old House Sewer Lines is a reference site about one pipe: the sewer line that carries everything from an older house in southern Westchester County to the public sewer. It covers who is responsible for that line, what it is made of, how it fails, what the county, the towns and the state plumbing code require, and how to stay safe around it.

What the site is, and is not

This is not a plumber, a drain-cleaning service or a sewer contractor. Nobody here inspects, clears, lines or replaces sewer lines, and the site has no phone line, booking form or service area. Work on a sewer lateral needs a plumber licensed in Westchester County and, usually, a permit from your city, town or village.

How the items are put together

Each item is short and starts with the answer. Rules, numbers and code sections come from official sources such as the Plumbing Code of New York State, the New York Department of State, Westchester County, the towns' own codes, the EPA, the CDC, OSHA and the gas utilities, and every item lists the sources it used at the bottom. Where a town's rule could not be confirmed from an official copy, the item says so and tells you who to ask. Dates on each page show when it was last updated.

Ownership

The people who own this site also own PlumbingSupplyAndMore, SoftPro Water Systems, Quality Water Treatment and Central Plumbing & HVAC. A few items link to one of them where it relates to the item, and every such link carries an ownership note beside it. Those businesses do not pay for placement, and no link here is an advertisement for a contractor in Westchester.

Videos and pictures

Some items include a video from an outside channel, such as a utility, a public agency or a standards group. Most pictures are photographs from public archives; a few are AI-generated pictures, and each of those is labelled as one. The picture credits page lists every photograph's source and licence.
